Measure in inches if the product dimensions are listed in inches. Record every result instead of relying on memory.
Step 1: measure the usable rear-seat width
Open both rear doors and measure horizontally across the seat cushion from the usable outer edge on one side to the usable outer edge on the other. Keep the tape straight and follow the widest practical area the cover needs to span.
Do not automatically measure from door panel to door panel. Thick armrests, wheel-well contours, molded bolsters, and door trim can reduce the usable seat width.
Record two width measurements if the seat is curved
- The width along the front edge of the seat cushion
- The width where the cushion meets the seatback
If these measurements differ, use both when evaluating fit. A cover that matches only the widest point may bunch at the rear edge.
Step 2: measure the seat cushion depth
Measure from the point where the seat cushion meets the seatback to the front edge of the cushion. Keep the tape centered on the seat rather than following a side bolster.
This measurement shows how much of the sitting surface the cover needs to protect. If the cover is much deeper than the cushion, some material may extend over the front edge. If it is too shallow, part of the cushion may remain uncovered.
Step 3: measure the rear seatback height
Measure vertically from the seat crease to the top of the upholstered seatback. If the cover straps around adjustable headrests, do not include the exposed metal headrest posts as part of the upholstered height.
Also note whether your vehicle has:
- Adjustable rear headrests
- Integrated or fixed headrests
- A split-folding rear seat
- A center armrest or pass-through
- Child-seat anchors or top-tether points that must remain accessible
Step 4: locate seat-belt buckles and approved restraint access
Measure the approximate position of each buckle from the left or right edge of the bench. Compare those positions with the openings shown in the product photos and instructions.

Step 5: measure for a hammock-style cover
A hammock spans from the rear headrests to the front headrests, so rear-bench width alone is not enough.
- Position the front seats where they normally remain during travel.
- Measure from the rear headrest attachment area down the rear seatback.
- Continue across the seat cushion.
- Continue upward toward the front headrest attachment area.
- Record the approximate total path without pulling the tape unusually tight.
Then measure the rear bench width as described above. Check that the cover's adjustable straps have suitable headrests to attach to and that the cover will not block front-seat controls.

Step 6: check side-flap and door clearance
If you are considering side flaps, open the doors and measure the distance from the outer seat edge to the area the flap should cover. Look for door handles, window controls, speakers, latches, and trim that must remain unobstructed.
After installation, close each door slowly the first time. Make sure the cover is not caught in the latch, folded over a control, or placed in an airbag deployment area.

Step 7: measure a front bucket seat
For a front-seat cover, record:
- Seat cushion width at the widest usable point
- Seat cushion depth from seatback to front edge
- Seatback width at the shoulder area

- Headrest type and distance between headrest posts, when applicable
